The Zambia Health Data Project: Embedding Data Literacy in a Global Health Study Abroad Course

Students in an embedded study abroad course utilized the Health Equity Assessment Toolkit from the World Health Organization to visualize various health indicators as part of their quest to better understand Zambian health and education systems before a service learning trip to Livingstone, Zambia in May 2026. In this presentation, Jane Campbell will discuss the development and context of the Zambia Health Data Project, instruction and implementation of the project, and student outcomes. Attendees will be invited to think of ways they could adapt the assignment to other courses and disciplines, including in study abroad contexts, as well as ways to scale up the assignment to more advanced levels of study.
